The Harmonized Tariff System

The Harmonized System of Tariff Classification
is a unified commodity identification system
used by all international trading partners.

The Canadian Harmonized Codes have 10 digits. The first six digits of these Commodity Codes are identical to those of other countries.

Additional sub-codes are added to suit the individual statistical requirements of each country. The Canadian Customs Tariff
currently uses about 20,000 sub-codes to define product differences within the same Tariff Categories.

Because Customs and Legal Authorities in every country place different emphasis on their interpretation of the harmonized nomenclature, many disagreements between Commodity Codes continue to exist between various countries.

Many exporters follow their own interpretations of the Commodity Codes and are often misguided by their complexity.

Therefore, one cannot always trust the codes assigned to a product by a supplier in another country!

Our Experts make full use of the "Harmonized Tariff", the "Explanatory Notes", the Canada Customs "National

Customs Rulings" System, as well as our extensive data base of Tariff Classifications to research the proper "Harmonized
Code" for every product imported by our Clients.
