Freight Forwarders

Freight Forwarders' services are useful for most - but not for all types of shipments and shipping conditions!

Freight Forwarders fulfill very useful services for current and prospective exporters and importers looking for a combination of carrier selection, transport documentation, freight rate negotiations and information on other aspects of shipping goods from one place to another.

Freight Forwarders are usually part of larger organizations which also offer warehousing, delivery and many other services. Once you sign up for the services of a large Freight Forwarder, you are usually serviced by their system of contracted carriers and loose your freedom of choosing your own favourite carriers and services!

Freight Forwarders make their living by getting a percentage of the freight charges paid by you to the Airlines and other Freight Carriers used by them. They also charge extra fees for documentation and handling, phone calls, photo copies and other services.

Freight Forwarders often offer "consolidated" freight rates that are somewhat lower than normal freight rates. However, their extra charges at both ends can easily add up to $100.00 or more per shipment. Your choice of using a Forwarder or an Air or Surface Courier should be made on a shipment-by- shipment basis.

For smaller shipments, freight rates charged by Couriers may appear high compared to the base rates of Freight Forwarders. However, considering the Forwarders' fees at both ends, using Couriers may actually be less expensive!
